Befriend Your Vata Dosha* to Enjoy a Healthy Fall and Winter
According to Maharishi Ayurveda, late fall and early winter are the time when Vata dosha increases in the environment and in our physiology. Keeping your Vata dosha balanced during that time will make your mind and body more resilient to the cold, dry and windy weather.
Ayurvedic scriptures say that 80 types of diseases are caused by Vata, 40 by Pitta and 20 by Kapha imbalance. In addition, Vata dosha is known as “the leader of the doshas” —another reason to keep it well balanced. A long standing Vata imbalance can lead other doshas out of balance by “invading their territories,” or interfering with their functions in the physiology.
The most powerful way to balance Vata, strengthen your immune system, and profoundly cleanse and rejuvenate your entire physiology is the Maharishi Ayurveda Rejuvenation Program (panchakarma).
These treatments also have a deeply calming and revitalizing effect on the mind and emotions making them an ideal choice for those who feel burdened by mental and emotional stress, which tends to increase during the Vata season. When the mind is agitated even ordinary tasks may at times feel stressful. But when it is allowed to settle down, like a wave settling down to become the ocean, everything appears in a new and balanced perspective.
These balancing and rejuvenating treatments are done in-residence at Maharishi Vedic Health Centers around the world. For more information about in-residence programs at Maharishi Vedic Health Center in Lancaster please call us at 877-890-8600, ext. 1111 or visit us at www.lancasterhealth.org

*Doshas (Vata, Pitta and Kapha): The three fundamental operating principles in our physiology. Vata is responsible for all movement in the body—circulation of blood, movement of food down the digestive tract, mental activity, etc. Pitta governs transformation and metabolism such as digestion of food and its transformation into bodily tissues, “digestion” of ideas and experiences, and more. Kapha gives solidity to the tissues, holds together different parts of the body and balances the bodily fluids.
Traditional Vedic texts associate each dosha with specific qualities. Vata is associated with cold, lightness, dryness and movement; Pitta with heat, light, sharpness and acidity; Kapha with cold, heaviness, oiliness and slowness.
Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are found everywhere in nature—wherever their qualities are present. Different foods, geographic locations, seasons, times of the day, etc. each have a predominant dosha associated with them. When a certain dosha increases in the environment it will tend to increase the same dosha in our physiology and vice versa.
